The National Privacy Principles (NPPs) in the Privacy Act set out how private sector organisations should collect, use, retain, secure and disclose personal information.

What is personal information?
Personal information is any information or an opinion that may be true or false about you. Personal information may be statistical, such as your address or dates of employment, or sensitive, such as your medical history. Personal information would include opinions of you by others about your work performance, as well as your contact details, experience, qualifications, aptitude test results and other information obtained by us in connection with potential work opportunities.
What is sensitive information?
Sensitive information is a special category of personal information. Sensitive information tends to be more opinion-based and may include:
- Opinions about your racial or ethnic origin
- Political opinion
- Sexual preferences or practices
- Criminal record
- Health or disability (at any time)
- Membership of a political association or religious beliefs, affiliations or philosophical beliefs
- Membership of a professional or trade association or membership of a trade union
